Music Video – Talking French by Young Lovers
This music video for the Young Lovers song Talking French was a side project for Kelly Dolen and myself, when we reached the end of The Gates Of Hell post production. It was a lot of fun to make and was a good way to remember what we liked about film making after such a massive project.
The clip was shot in a day in a theater at Haileybury College in Melbourne. Kelly, myself and two lighting guys the band brought along were the only crew on this one. From memory the guys performed the track about thirty times over the day and I think they were truly sick of it at the end. We shot with a single Sony EX3 camera. Knowing I was going to grunge and dirty it all up in post, we just used the standard lenses on the camera.
Back in the studio and I began putting it all together. It was awkward at first, as the footage was so flat and "videoy" looking. To add a lot more energy to the shots I composited coloured light flashes and animated camera shake to the shots. As a final touch, I graded it down to enrich the blacks and added a lot of dirt and grime to the image. It worked and I think we ended up with a really cool clip. The band loved it.
